At the Holon Industrial Site, which we investigated, we identified that there are a variety of uses. There are a variety of businesses such as: aluminum construction systems, auto parts, furniture painting, many carpentry shops, all working together at the same time.
Businesses that are different from each other work together in one structure in close proximity to each other.
“The Module as a Life Unit”
We've identified that the whole structure is made of the same permanent, repetitive units. The building is the repetitive module that appears on the site, with each business renting/buying one or more units within. This module serves as a "life unit" for the user– has the right infrastructure and actually succeeds in its planning to provide everything necessary for the person and his business. After each business owner has bought or rented a unit, he intervenes in it and changes or produces new things within the module that will suit the specific use of his or her business.
We discovered through the employees on the site that the existing module is friendly to them and manages to be a safe and pleasant space for them. Therefore, we have decided that we will use this site, adopt the principle of modular planning and take it further to the planning. We place a massive constructive skeleton built on top of the existing site. The skeleton is permanent and does not change. Each business has a single module at a minimum, and will be allowed to expand both out and upwards to purchase a gallery module. In a situation in which not every business expands to the maximum area it has, open spaces are created that are used for social and leisure meetings.
