At the beginning of the semester when I was researching the city, I was interested in the area of 127 Madison street, New York, where the infrastructure of the Manhattan Bridge and the proximity of the infrastructure to the buildings adjacent to it caught my attention.
In this collage I examined how the Manhattan Bridge passes over the city and creates new spaces: the Voids.
Aside from regular pedestrian and vehicle crossings, the four voids are useless, so we often see them neglected and untreated because no one is responsible for them.
I started thinking about what those spaces would look like if residents started taking responsibility for the area, and what programs could be added if that materialized.
The bridge creates new spaces. Whether they are momentary or for a longer time.
Like for example, the little man who lives in the belly of the bridge, to whom the rescue team arrives trying to figure out how to live inside the bridge
In the planning process, I examined the void in which I would like to intervene and examined the various relationships and scales that exist in it: between the pedestrians and the constructive pillars, between the buildings and the "belly" of the bridge and more.
the "mega construction", the Manhattan Bridge, crosses the city and visually divides it into two areas - the side east of the Manhattan Bridge, and the side west of the Manhattan Bridge. Both operate businesses, residential buildings, markets and transportation.
This project is about wanting to connect the city.
The connection is made by creating an interface of points of buildings with pedestrian paths and the roofs of the buildings that are under the bridge.
The structure I propose connects the points above and meets the needs of Manhattan residents who are looking for a place to rest in the middle of the day, and a bird’s eye view of their city.
The building allows residents to enjoy a different view of the city.
Unlike walking on the regular sidewalk, the pedestrians ascend the elevation level and are closer to the "belly" of the bridge.
These voids are darker than the rest of the city, so I chose a glass structure which will let in sunlight during the day, as much as possible.
The glass was also intended to create the transparency between the people above and the people below on the ground, and between the buildings and occurrences east of the bridge to the west of the bridge, as opaque material would increase the sense of separation of the two parts of the city.
we can see the different levels, that the transition between one and the other can be through different stairs or ramps, and through the two elevators that are located at road level. The edges of the building extend to the roofs of the buildings on which the building stands and offers open and green areas for leisure.
The building is an attraction for the general public, and offers something more attractive, as opposed to the closed and dark space created due to the laying of the bridge above.
The alienated atmosphere and passages that no one takes responsibility for, can be turned into an urban-community square, which will become a source of experience in itself and not just a passage with no choice.
